First Six Months of a Realtor Life

In my career, I have mentored more than 200 successful Realtors®, most of whom either started or restarted their career with me. The ones who began were the ones who were looking for the right direction, and those who continued were taking their last chance before deciding to leave their Real Estate career as they had tried at every place but couldn’t be successful. We have successfully designed a career path; almost 100% are making six minimum six-figure earnings, and few reached seven figures. I am sharing the first six months’ journey as a Realtor’s® life based on my experience, and we will use John as a fictitious character in our story.

John was fascinated to see his Realtors® friends driving luxury cars and living a good life. He knew many people and bought and sold the house a few times. Every time he paid some handsome commissions to his Realtor® friends. He was considering saving that money and wanted to make some extra money. He was doing a decent job simultaneously, helping to run his family and house. He decided to take a Real Estate license and wanted to make some extra money with his job and later join the profession full-time. John started working on getting his Real Estate license. During that period, he kept planning his Real Estate career but always had a fear in his mind that he couldn’t talk to too many people; otherwise, his boss at a job or any other colleague would come to know about his Real Estate profession, and he might have trouble at the position. But he was making a list of potential buyers and sellers in his friend’s circle and acquaintances about whom he was sure to get the business.

Finally, the day came when John got his license. Very excited, he started taking interviews with the brokerages (as he was taught in class to interview brokerages …. I will write a separate article on this) and decided to join the one with 100s and 1000s of agents as he got a good split there. He was assured of a so-called high-class training to make him a top Realtors®. John never thought that the same Brokerage had more than 95% Realtors® who are not doing even a decent no of transactions under the same training.

Now John was waiting for his friends and family to call him to buy or sell the house. Finally, the day came when one of his very close friends called to give him the good news and invited him to his housewarming ceremony. John was shocked as he expected this friend to buy the house through him. John asked him, Why you didn’t buy the house through me? The friend said, John, you never told me you are a Realtor® as well, and as far as I know, you are doing a job. Suddenly John realized he was a secret agent as he had never told his friend. John started sharing with his other friends and got the second surprise of his life when his cousin’s brother bought a house from another Realtor® and gave John the excuse of fear of not losing the relationship, and that’s why he avoided the Real Estate transaction with John. However, it was an excuse; the cousin’s brother was not confident that John could justify the job. John was very disappointed and lost his motivation to make Real Estate his career. He spoke to his Broker of Record and senior colleagues at his office, who discouraged him either by not showing the right path or making fun of the profession. John was trifling with the biggest problem: every morning, he didn’t know what to do sitting at home as his Brokerage told him he didn’t need to come to the office. He was wasting his time doing household chores and was directionless. John tried his best, but as he didn’t have proper guidance and so-called training in his office was not enough to train him to fight the fierce competition; John decided to go back to his job.

My question to you is why you think John was not successful. Was he not talented? Was he not hard-working?

That was not the case; John missed one of the most important things: the right platform to perform. The right Brokerage can guide him in the right direction and equip him with all the right tools and mentorship support. The initial six months are crucial and either make or break your career.

Please ask yourself the following questions….

1. Do you have no clue in the morning as to what to do?

2. Your Brokerage doesn’t encourage you to come to the office?

3. Is there any full-time mentor available at the office who will accompany you for listing and buying for the first six months at least?

4. You meet your broker of Record occasionally, say once a month or even more.

5. You Broker of Record never told you to elevate to the next level.

6. You don’t like attending the office or a so-called training session.

7. Your friend working in Save Max is busy doing Real Estate and progressing.

I am sure these answers will help you think twice and at least attempt to come and see what is happening in your surroundings.
